Under the banner of "Land of Opportunity" - PICO's vision of an American economy that provides opportunity for everyone - faith leaders pledged to lead civic engagement efforts across the nation.

CALIFORNIA

California Governor Links Opportunity to Revenue Measure

Gov. Jerry Brown joined more than 200 PICO California clergy in a press conference at the state capitol to demonstrate support for the Compromise Revenue Initiative, a tax initiative that would generate desperately needed funds for the state. PICO faith leaders pledged to reach out to 100,000 new and infrequent faith voters, urging them to vote and to support new revenue for California. See slideshow>

FLORIDA

Florida Clergy Say No to Amendment 3

PICO United Florida clergy met last week to launch Florida Prophetic Voices and to launch a campaign to defeat Amendment 3, a measure that would deepen cuts to schools, healthcare and public safety. The measure, which will be on the November ballot, has been advanced by politicians in Tallahassee and out-of-state interests to create a new state revenue limit.

Clergy were joined at the event by civil rights leader Dr. Virgil Wood; the Rev. Bernard Yates, president of the National Primitive Baptist Convention; and Kathy Saile of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and other church and civic leaders. See slideshow>

COLORADO

Together Colorado to Register New Voters

At a public action last week, the leaders of Together Colorado (formerly known as Metro Organizations for People) announced plans to register 8,000 new voters and engage 40,000 current voters on a slate of issues, including: immigration and education reform, preservation of the Affordable Care Act, divestment from big banks, and tuition relief for undocumented immigrant college students. "Voting is faith in action," said Rich McLean, a Together Colorado leader. More than 1,200 people, including public officials from Aurora and Denver, attended the event. See slideshow>

MISSOURI

Missouri: 'Show Me Economic Dignity'

Since January, Communities Creating Opportunity leaders have taken to the streets, collecting signatures to put initiatives to raise the minimum wage and cap the interest rate on small dollar loans on the ballot. CCO leaders and clergy have collected 45,000 signatures –doubling their goal and taking huge steps toward getting both measures on the ballot. The group also announced their "Show Me Economic Dignity" campaign and pledged to reach out to the state's current voters and register new voters. Watch the video>

MINNESOTA

In Minnesota, Faith Leaders Take on Proposed Voter ID Law

More than 250 faith leaders from across the state, gathered to launch the "Prophetic Voices" campaign, a plan which aims to engage congregations and clergy on issues such as the Voter ID ballot initiative and racial disparities in education, health care and jobs. In an event organized by ISAIAH and other state groups, faith leaders pledged to preach, teach and organize for economic and racial justice.

LOUISIANA

New Orleans' Micah Project Demands Jail Reforms

More than 400 faith leaders urged the sheriff and other city officials to commit to a series of reforms aimed at reducing the number of people languishing in jail. The sheriff, chief administrative officer, and crime commissioner each pledged to support Micah's asks, which include the abolition of a system of per diem state funding that critics say lends a financial incentive to leave defendants behind bars. Dozens of PICO clergy leaders held a prayer vigil for shareholders and a public march to the demonstration held outside the Wells Fargo annual shareholders meeting in San Francisco last week.Thousands of struggling and evicted homeowners peacefully demanded Wells Fargo executives pay their fair share and take more aggressive action to keep families in their homes and help deeply underwater homeowners. THE SOUTHWEST

Faithful Citizenship in New Mexico and Nevada

Faith leaders in New Mexico and Nevada gathered at two separate events to launch clergy-led civic engagement and social justice efforts. More than 100 attended an event in Las Cruces, New Mexico, organized by Comunidades en Accion y de Fe (CAFe), and in Nevada, brand-new PICO federation Acting in Community Together in Organizing Northern Nevada (ACTIONN) brought together a dozen clergy and leaders.


NEXT UP:  OHIO

Faith leaders to form Ohio Prophetic Voices

Hundreds of clergy leaders from across Ohio will help launch Ohio Prophetic Voices on May 3 in Cincinnati. The new effort is a project of Ohio Organizing Collaborative and will bring together faith leaders to work on human trafficking, jobs for the formerly incarcerated, neighborhood safety, food access, and economic stability, as well as voter registration and civic engagement.

 

The following day, the Cincinnati-based AMOS Project will host United by Faith: A Summit on Faith, Race & Justice. The summit will launch PICO's Lifelines to Healing Campaign first multi-city tour. Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, and Michael Emerson, author of Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America will be the keynote presenters at the event.
