{PBJFlorida} IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: Join the Cause with FOCUS to Send Message to Tallahassee

Last week I went to an exciting event where I witnessed the mostly churches of color (although many white churches are also involved) and mosques taking the front lines to defeat the draconian laws being introduced in Tallahassee. There are three issues that FOCUS through PICO are concentrating on defeating this election year in Florida:

-Voter Suppression
-Anti-Immigration Bills
-Foreclosed Homes issues favoring corporations

The immediate focus is getting the NO vote out on proposed Amendment No. 3 in the November 6 ballot. FOCUS needs help to spread the news about this anti-family, -poor, and -middle class bill. Well over 100 Christian ministers and Imams officially endorsed killing this bill in front of national newspapers and TV cameras last week.

What is unique about this movement is that it's not only interdenominational and interfaith, but comprised of conservative, moderate, and liberal religious leaders and lay people.

I would like to enlist the help of local Amnesty International through Penny and Alicia, YAYA through Nico and Nicole, as well as Louise and Jim through there community contacts. Also, anyone else wanting to join this effort will be more than welcomed. The goals are (1) to "Register as many people as possible to vote" and then (2) get as many people as possible to vote against any laws that oppress the poor and working poor. PLEASE JOIN ME IN THIS EFFORT as I make this one of my main tasks for the remainder of this year. Thanks!

The gist of Amendment 3 is described below, followed by news links.

"Amendment 3 is a constitutional amendment that will be on the Nov. 6 general election ballot. It would take a 60 percent approval vote to become law.

The amendment would enact a new revenue limitation based on  inflation and population change. Any funds that exceed the revenue limits would be placed in the state's "rainy day fund." Once the fund reaches 10% of the prior year's total budget the Florida Legislature would be required to vote to either provide tax relief or reduce property taxes.
PICO and FOCUS contend Amendment 3 is a wolf in sheep's clothing.  It does nothing to make sure large, profitable corporations pay their fair share for services they use.  Today, just 2 percent of corporations pay taxes in Florida, making working people and homeowners foot the bill for schools, roads, and other services we need to create jobs and build a strong economy."
